Makati City Plans to Offer City-Wide WiFi Network
Makati City is campaigning to the be the first WiFi-enabled city in Metro Manila. The city government has announced plans to blanket the entire city with WiFi hotspots, enabling smartphone, tablet and notebook computer users to connect for free wirelessly.
The project was unveiled by Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay, which initially covers the Makati city hall. The project seeks to cover the city’s 33 towns with wireless hotspots in partnership with the Philippine Long Distance Co.’s Wi-Fi Zone service.
Makati City hosts one of the Philippines’ central business districts, and the city government believes a city-wide WiFi infrastructure will help boost productivity in the business sector. Binay also wants to target students in the city, and plans to distribute free prepaid cards to students to help in their studies.
Binay said the city already has a fiber loop infrastructure, which will eventually be used as a backbone for the WiFi network.
In line with the WiFi network launch, Makati is also offering traffic updates through its Twitter account @MakatiTraffic. The young city mayor believes that these technology initiatives “will make governance more efficient,” and can help reduce red tape and corruption.
