EdgeConneX to build new data center campus in Cyberjaya

As one of the world’s leading data center solutions providers, EdgeConneX continues to expand its presence in Southeast Asia. The pioneer in hyperlocal-to-global hyperscale data center solutions has finalized a deal with Cyberview Sdn Bhd to build a data center campus in Malaysia.

The 30-acre data center campus will be built in Cyberjaya, an area already well known in Malaysia for its data center infrastructure. In fact, EdgeConneX joins a number of global data center companies that are already operating in the area, including Bridge Data Centers, NTT, and AIMS Data Centers.

The new data center campus will have a capacity of over 200MW, offering scalable capacity and power to meet a wide range of customer needs in the future. The US-based company signed the agreement with Cyberview earlier this month to acquire an enterprise lot to develop the data center.

Apart from a new data center campus in Cyberjaya, there are also plans to build two more data centers in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. Here are the details of all the three data centers:

• Kuala Lumpur Central Business District (CBD): Marked by an excellent central location, the data center will be built within the downtown business district of Malaysia’s modern capital, Kuala Lumpur. Offering 19 MW IT Load capacity, this facility will provide customers ample opportunity for customized, build-to-suit configurations and highly proximate, low latency solutions to the capital city.
• Bukit Jalil: As a prosperous suburb of greater Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Jalil is home to several educational, technological, and medical institutions. With nearly 70 MWs IT Load capacity, this EdgeConneX site is a greenfield build in the MRANTI technology park, offering ample power to address hyperscale and large-scale cloud or AI deployments.
• Cyberjaya: The EdgeConneX data center campus will have over 200 MWs of capacity and consist of nine buildings spread over 30 acres, providing the scalable capacity and power to meet a whole array of customer requirements in the future.

According to Randy Brouckman, CEO and Co-founder of EdgeConneX, the company is committed to the society and economy within which they operate.

“The new campus in Cyberjaya will bring the necessary capacity and innovation to grow businesses in the tech hub, and meet increasing hyperscaler and enterprise customers’ needs. The campus is also expected to create various job opportunities across construction, management, functional and operational roles in the city,” said Brouckman.

Cyberjaya recently saw an increase in data center investments, cementing its role as the global technology hub. The city is currently home to 14 data center facilities in Cyberjaya, contributing up to 75% of the nation’s total data capacity. There are also several other planned data centers to be built in the area, including facilities by Equinix, Vantage Data Centers and several others.

“EdgeConneX’s investment in Cyberjaya represents a significant achievement and positions the city as a prime destination for hyperscale data centre providers. Our commitment to fostering innovation, combined with Malaysia’s growing digital economy will further increase the demand for data centres to be based in our city. We also estimate technology investments of RM35 billion for the next five to 10 years, which aligns with Cyberjaya’s position as the preferred technology investment location,” commented Kamarul Ariffin Abdul Samad, Chief Executive Officer, Cyberview Sdn Bhd.

EdgeConneX joins Malaysia’s growing data center market

The data center market in Malaysia continues to see significant investments, with more companies investing and building their infrastructure in the country. The state of Johor is another popular location for data center infrastructures, given its close proximity to Singapore.

The state is already home to several large data centers, including some belonging to YTL Data Centers, GDS and Keppel. Princeton Digital Group and Singapore’s Singtel also have plans to build data centers in the southern region of Malaysia.

In fact, in 2022, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, Google, and Telekom Malaysia received conditional approval to establish and operate hyperscale data centers and offer cloud services in Malaysia, with Chinese cloud provider Alibaba already in the market.

Arizton’s latest research report says the Malaysia data center market will grow at a CAGR of 9.41% during 2022-2028. The report also states that Malaysia had a 15% market share of overall data center investment in Southeast Asia in 2022.

As the electricity prices in Malaysia are low compared to other countries in Southeast Asia, the report adds that most data center operators are dependent on local power grids. Therefore, the demand for efficient and high-redundancy generator sets is expected to be high in the coming years.
